Statement from Poarch Creek Indians Tribal Leadership: Poarch Creek Indians Call for Transparency and Community Voice in Development Decisions Affecting Rural South Alabama

Tribal leadership announces community engagement initiatives and encourages meaningful dialogue regarding proposed solar developments in Baldwin and Escambia counties.

Atmore, Ala.  – The Poarch Creek Indians Tribal Leadership recognizes that large-scale development projects can have lasting impacts on communities. As Alabama’s only federally recognized Tribe, we have a responsibility to protect our cultural heritage while advocating for the communities where our Tribal Citizens and employees live, work, worship, own businesses, and raise families.

We are not outsiders to these conversations. We are Alabama neighbors who share the same concerns about preserving the quality of life, community character, natural resources, and cultural heritage that make this region home.

In response to growing concerns around these proposed developments, Poarch Creek representatives will begin actively attending community conversations, and at times hosting  community meetings, to ensure citizens, elected officials, landowners, and stakeholders have an opportunity to learn more about these issues and participate in meaningful discussions about the future of our area.

While these conversations were prompted by proposed solar developments, the Tribe’s interest in preservation extends beyond any single project. Whether the issue involves solar energy facilities or other forms of large-scale development, progress should be accompanied by thoughtful consideration of the people, culture, environment, and community character that may be affected.

Over the past several months, the Tribe has sought good-faith dialogue with the companies proposing these projects in Baldwin and Escambia counties. We appreciate the willingness of Silicon Ranch and NextEra Energy to engage in productive discussions regarding Tribal consultation and community concerns, and we look forward to continuing those conversations as these projects evolve.

Despite repeated attempts to establish communication, Tensaw Solar has not responded to the Tribe’s requests for dialogue. This lack of engagement is particularly concerning given the cultural significance of the Tensaw area associated with the proposed project. The Tribe believes responsible development begins with meaningful engagement and transparency. Without open communication, opportunities to identify and address cultural concerns, community impacts, and potential preservation measures may be missed.

We believe those of us who will ultimately live with the consequences of major development decisions deserve a meaningful voice in conversations about the future of our communities.
