Amanda’s late grandfather, Otha, is one of her most influential role models. After retiring as a tugboat captain, he dedicated his life to his garden. Harvesting. Working. Planting — okra, corn, squash, grains, cabbage, collard greens. When people sat down to eat his food it drew them together and helped the community. As a child, Otha’s generous spirit shaped Amanda’s family’s values of giving and sharing. Their home was always open to friends in need. Stories of the iconic vegetable garden that united a community bring back the wisdom and guidance of a great Poarch man.
