Mal grew up in a house adjoining a country store opened by his father who died very young. With five kids and a sixth-grade education, his mother ran the store for over 30 years. Summers were enjoyed with friends jumping into the creek and playing with “play pretties.” The slingshot was a favorite as the boys ran through the woods hunting small game tracing the footsteps of ancestors.
